Get the Right-Size Hole for Any Building or Landscaping Task
Also called an earth auger, a tractor post hole digger can create holes consistently wide and deep enough to make driving fence posts or planting trees, shrubs and other greenery in them easier. It provides more leverage and digging power for going deeper into denser, more compacted and debris-ridden soil than a manual post hole digger or gas- or battery-powered hand auger.
How They Work
Installable on farm equipment with a three-point hitch, a tractor post hole digger features a gearbox and rotating auger set in a frame with a boom. They both connect to and run off a power take-off (PTO) system. The gearbox transfers power from the PTO to the auger, enabling the bit to cut into the soil, and the frame and boom give it the reach and stability to reliably dig holes to the proper depth.
What to Look For
You will need one that is compatible with your tractor's PTO and hitch specs and right for breaking up the type of soil you plan to work in. The tougher the ground, the more horsepower the digger will need to be able to handle. The depth and diameter of the holes you need to dig are also factors, so choose a digger that supports augers of the proper size.
Gearboxes often include shear bolts that help protect them from damage caused by obstructions such as rocks and roots. Auger bits are available in different diameters and can be swapped out depending on size of the hole you want to dig.
